How to clean AirPods and any other wireless earbuds you have

The cleaning process varies depending on the type of headphones you have. First, there are wireless earbuds with removable silicone (or plastic) buds.. like the Galaxy Buds, Sony’s WF-1000XM4.. or most Beats headphones, and several models with a single solid body.. like Apple’s original AirPods.

The main difference is that the detachable tips are easier to deep clean. They are also replaceable and spares often come in the box. You can also use soapy water or other gentle cleaning products on the ends of the headphones especially.. without fear of damaging the electrical parts of the headphones.

Steps to clean wireless earbuds

Wipe the earpads and removable tips with a cloth. Since most wireless headphones are stored in a case.. you may find that dirt from the tips has moved to the headphones as well. Apple says you can use “70 percent isopropyl alcohol powder.. 75 percent ethyl alcohol.. or disinfectant wipes” to clean the outside of the wireless headphones,.. but it advises against using wet wipes on the speaker grille parts of the AirPods. Samsung tips stick to soft dry cloths and cotton swabs.

Remove the ends, and gently trace the inside of each bud with a cotton swab.. or a toothpick if you need something thinner. If there is any stuck-on residue.. upgrade to the grommet on the end of the earphone cleaning tool, but go with caution. Metal objects are more likely to scratch and puncture objects. The scrubber also has a brush on the other end to pull up any loose dirt. Once it’s clear, wipe the sides of the ends with a slightly damp cloth.

The tips of the AirPods Pro have a micromesh membrane.. which makes them easier to clean than the membranes on the headphones themselves.. but they’re also fragile. Apple itself advises that you can rinse the terminals with water, adding that you shouldn’t use soap.. or other cleaning products on them. If you are using a damp cloth or rinsing it, be sure to lay it out on a dry cloth.. and let it dry completely before putting it back together.

Apple recommends using a cotton swab or a dry cloth for the microphone.. and speaker grille parts of your AirPods. You can also use a blower with a bulb.. which should apply a slight amount of force to dislodge dirt without damaging the electrical. However, while it may be stronger, don’t use canned air. Sony says this can force dust into the microphone or the audio-out holes.
